If you are thinking of becoming a dentist in the UK, there are many steps you will need to follow. The earlier you decide that you do want to become a dentist, the more you can prepare for what is to be asked of you. That does not mean you cannot apply later on. Some of the best dentists are those that have decided that they want to become a dentist later on...they were much more sure of the commitment.
The steps you will need to follow are as follows -
1) Do well in your GCSEs - they will really help you when the competition to get into university increases
2) Do A levels that are needed to do dentistry, That means doing biology and chemistry. The grades you will need is AAB as well as an AS level. Choose other subjects that are scientific, although they do like maths. Also you can choose something that shows you are artistic or good with your hands.
3) Practice for your UKCAT test while you are in your first year of A levels and take it in the year you decide to apply to university. (Usually after your first year of A levels) This is a test you will need to do as most universities expect it. It is a hard test which is testing things like decision analysis and verbal reasoning. There are many test places that you can join and get the hang of it. It just means that you are going to have to be really good at time management. Since in this year you will be studying for 3 A levels, one AS level and practicing for the UKCAT test. You will also need to be achieving good grades in your A and AS levels since these are the predicted grades that will either get you in or out of university.
4) Apply to Dental University. This is also a matter of time management since you will be visiting dental schools, filling in your application form and attending interviews ( we hope) at the same time studying for your second year of A levels. Filling in the application forms is not easy. It requires you to spend time on it as it is the main way that universities can see if you are a suitable candidate (after the grades).
These tips I have written here are some basic ones. There are many other steps which you will need to take in order to be successful at getting into dental school. There is the interview, the right extra- curricular activities and the right way to fill in your UCAS form....
